Overview
A vanpool is a group of 8-15 commuters who share a ride in a van leased through the PTC and a third-party van provider. By leasing through us, your group will get a much lower rate than if you rented a van independently.
Similar to a carpool arrangement, your vanpool group decides when and where to meet in the mornings. You may have passengers from just one company, or you might decide to make another stop at a nearby office. One member of your group volunteers to be the primary driver: the van goes home with them each night, and they get special privileges like personal use of the van on weekends. At least one other person must become an approved alternate driver.
The fare per passenger varies on the number of people riding and the van vendor you use. Riders also share the cost of gas. The PTC will help get quotes from the vendors for van groups to evaluate. Riders who switch from driving alone to vanpool are eligible for the Cash for Commuters program, where they can earn up to $100 for changing their commute mode. For every vanpool formed, 7-14 cars are removed from the road, making vanpools one of the Perimeter’s best tools for reducing traffic congestion.

Health Benefits
Commuting by vanpool is also good on your nerves. You can read, sleep, or catch up on some work- while someone else drives using HOV lanes. Arrive at work and home without the stress of rush hour.
Vanpool Formation 101
The PTC can host an event at your workplace to find riders for a vanpool. Lunch ‘n Learns, Meet your Match and Zipcode parties can bring people together who are interested in vanpooling. Once a core group of seven or eight interested employees is identified, the PTC can help you get your van on the road. If you need a few more riders, we’ll search our database, but we will need your help to form a core group first.
Regional Subsidies
Douglas County and Cherokee County each provide a vanpool subsidy and a free gas card for qualifying residents.
