CNN did a story recently on Alex Olewicz’ inspiring commute. His employer, St. Joseph’s Hospital, reimburses employees for their bike commute expenses up to $20 per month, tax free. Alex also earns $15 gift cards through PTC for biking to work.
“The $20 reimbursement and PTC gift cards come in handy and they are a good reward for taking part in an alternative form of commuting. Plus they help offset the cost of maintaining my bicycle and buying gear (or a new bike). Ask your employer if they’ll provide the $20 reimbursement. I found out about it, researched it, and presented all of the information (and benefits of bicycle commuting) to St. Joseph’s. They were more than willing to provide me with this benefit. Not a lot of people or employers know about it. Also, your employer could assist in other ways – providing a place to shower and change, providing a place to store your bicycle, etc.”
Find out more about the Bicycle Commuter Benefit and ask your company to consider participating.
Alex says, “I commute via bicycle for many reasons, mainly to get exercise and maintain a healthy lifestyle, save money on commuting costs, and save the environment.”
Thinking about trying it this spring? “Start small – plan a route and try it out on a weekend or holiday,” Alex advises. “Bike one day a week and build up as you get more comfortable. Also, be safe and follow the rules of the road. Wear a helmet and stop at stop lights and signs. It helps to promote a good image of bicyclers. Lastly, have fun. Say hi to other bicycle commuters, walkers, and people in cars. Enjoy life!”
Congrats Alex, and keep up the great work.
